Eyes on the Baby Training - Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) Prevention
The Eyes on the Baby project is a collaborative piece of work conducted by Darlington Borough Council's Public Health Unit and Durham University’s Infancy & Sleep Centre. Eyes on the Baby is a training and implementation package to promote safer infant sleep and prevent sudden infant deaths in Darlington.
The training which has been developed by Durham University has been designed to help staff prevent SUDI (Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy) in Darlington. Most unexpected deaths of babies under 1 year occur in families living in impoverished circumstances with multiple risks or vulnerabilities, and a multi-agency approach is needed to reach the families most at risk of infant death. Training the multi-agency workforce in Darlington will help staff give advice about safer sleep, support shared working between services, and keep Eyes on the Baby to reduce SUDI.
There are three levels of training within the programme, each graded to give information and resources at an appropriate level for a range of staff roles. The resources provide additional information for staff as well as tools and checklists for staff to use in practice. Evaluation methods, including trainee feedback, will be used to assess the effectiveness of training and identify areas for improvement.
Before enrolling on the Eyes on the Baby training, please ensure you are accessing the correct Strand based on your job role. An example list of practitioners is outlined within each of the training strands.
Strand 1 is for staff who encounter vulnerable families occasionally as part of every-day work (e.g. working inside peoples' homes or responding to a crisis).
Strand 2 is for staff who provide direct support to vulnerable families (e.g. frequent contact with families or support with infant care or family issues) - there are three parts to complete for this strand.
Strand 3 is for health practitioners involved in routine or emergency care of vulnerable families (e.g. pre and postnatal support or universal safer sleep information) - there are three parts to complete for this strand.
